Learning, Laughter, and Life Skills: Milligan Occupational Therapy Students Make an Impact at FTHRA Adult Day Services

At FTHRA’s Adult Day Services (ADS), meaningful moments happen every day, but on a recent visit, those moments were shaped by a unique partnership with occupational therapy students from Milligan University.

Before sitting down for an interview, I had the opportunity to observe six students—Zulma, Reagan, Emma, Holly, Katie, and Sierra—lead a group activity with ADS participants. What unfolded was more than a simple exercise. It was a thoughtful, collaborative experience rooted in skill-building, encouragement, and connection.

A Hands-On Approach to Everyday Skills

The activity of the day focused on a familiar but essential life skill: folding laundry. Using a DIY folding board crafted from a large piece of cardboard—similar to those used in retail stores—the students demonstrated techniques for folding clothes both with and without assistive tools.

But they didn’t stop there. To reinforce the lesson, the group introduced a game called “assembly line.” Participants worked together in a sequence: one person sorted clothing items into categories like shirts, shorts, and pants; the next folded each piece; and the final person placed the folded items into a basket, mimicking a dresser or closet system.

The room quickly filled with energy and laughter. The activity emphasized teamwork, community, and dexterity while breaking down the steps of a daily task into something engaging and achievable. Throughout the process, the students offered encouragement, gently guided participants, and ensured everyone remained motivated and involved.

Finding Purpose Through Service

Following the activity, the students shared reflections on their experience at ADS and their journey into occupational therapy. A common thread connected all six: a deep desire to help others. Many cited past experiences, such as working in group homes for adults, as pivotal in shaping their career path.

Now, through their time at ADS, that passion is being put into practice.

They spoke warmly about the relationships they’ve built, noting how clients “light up” when they return each week. For the students, these interactions go beyond coursework, they create a sense of purpose.

One story stood out: a participant expressed heartfelt gratitude for being included in the sessions, describing them as fun, engaging, and genuinely helpful. Moments like these, the students shared, reaffirm why they chose this field.

Creativity, Connection, and Community

While life skills are a core focus, the students emphasized that some of their favorite moments come from creative activities. Crafting—especially making Valentine’s Day cards—has been a highlight.

During these sessions, participants eagerly share who they are creating for, often speaking about loved ones with pride and affection. The students described this time as especially “meaningful,” as it allows individuals to express care and connection through something they’ve made themselves.

In addition to crafts, the group also facilitates other practical, real-world exercises, including money management games and pantry organization tasks. Each activity is designed to support independence while meeting participants where they are.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The experience at ADS is just as impactful for the students as it is for the participants. It provides an opportunity to translate classroom knowledge into real-world application, something they say has been invaluable.

They’ve learned how to better connect with individuals by understanding personal interests and adapting activities accordingly. They’ve also developed the ability to explain tasks in multiple ways, ensuring each participant can engage and succeed at their own pace.

Collectively, they described their time at ADS as both “fun” and “encouraging”, an experience that is actively shaping their future careers in occupational therapy.

The Role of Adult Day Services

FTHRA’s Adult Day Services program provides a supportive, structured environment for adults who may need assistance with daily activities or benefit from social engagement. Through ADS, participants gain access to enriching activities, health monitoring, and opportunities to build connections within their community.

Occupational therapy plays a vital role in this setting. By focusing on practical skills and adaptive techniques, it empowers individuals to build independence and maintain a higher quality of life.

A Partnership That Makes a Difference

FTHRA’s ongoing partnership with Milligan University brings a new group of occupational therapy students into ADS each year, a collaboration that has consistently benefited everyone involved.

Participants look forward to the students’ visits, and the students gain invaluable, hands-on experience that prepares them for their careers. It’s a partnership built on mutual learning, compassion, and shared purpose.

As I watched the session come to a close, one thing was clear: the impact of this program goes far beyond the activities themselves. It lives in the smiles, the laughter, and the quiet confidence built with each folded shirt, each crafted card, and each moment of connection.
