Finding Purpose Through Connection: Lauren’s Journey with SCSEP
Lauren Albanese’s journey to Mountain City, Tennessee, is one of resilience, transformation, and community impact. In 2018, she and her husband left the bustling city of Charlotte, North Carolina, for a quieter life in the mountains. However, shortly after their move, Lauren’s world was turned upside down when her husband was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. After his passing in 2019, Lauren sought a way to connect with her new community and heal from her grief.
The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) became a lifeline for her. Seeking a career change, Lauren enrolled in SCSEP through the First Tennessee Human Resource Agency (FTHRA) and found an opportunity at the Johnson County Senior Center. Her new role was to contact senior center members and perform welfare checks, particularly for those who hadn’t been seen at the center in a while. Her task seemed simple—checking in, offering emotional support, and keeping seniors informed of center activities—but it quickly became much more.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, Lauren’s role became essential. The seniors she checked on, many of whom lived alone, faced heightened isolation. Her daily calls became a source of comfort and connection. Lauren heard stories of loneliness, sickness, and hope, and these conversations inspired her in unexpected ways. Realizing the importance of spiritual support for some of the seniors, Lauren decided to attend Bible College, studying theology and ministry to better serve those who sought spiritual guidance.
Lauren reflects on her time with the senior center as a deeply transformative experience. She emphasizes that small acts of kindness can make a world of difference. “People think you have to do big things to change the world,” Lauren says, “but that’s not true. You can change the world by simply caring for the people around you.”
Her story is a testament to the power of community, compassion, and human connection. Through her work with SCSEP, FTHRA, and the Johnson County Senior Center, Lauren has become a lifeline for many seniors in her community—and in the process, she found healing and purpose in her own life.
