Greene County Mayor Proclaims May as Foster Care Awareness Month

In Greene County, TN, the county mayor, Kevin Morrison, has officially designated May as Foster Care Awareness Month, shedding light on the vital role of foster care in our community. This proclamation, presented to Rhonda Humbert, director of the Foster Grandparent Program, underscores the significance of supporting and advocating for foster youth and families.

At a recent ceremony honoring foster grandparents, community members in Greeneville praised Rhonda Humbert's unwavering dedication and leadership within the Foster Grandparent Program. Her tireless efforts illuminate the crucial role this program plays in our society, providing essential mentorship, support, and guidance to children in need.

The Foster Grandparent Program distinguishes itself by engaging Americans aged 55 and older in volunteer service while offering one-on-one support to children to enhance their academic, social, and emotional development. Through mentorship, foster grandparents serve as trusted companions, offering invaluable guidance and encouragement to the youth they assist.

While foster care provides a safe and nurturing environment for children without stable homes, fostering a sense of belonging and security, the Foster Grandparent Program extends a unique form of support tailored to the individual needs of each child. By fostering meaningful relationships and providing personalized guidance, foster grandparents empower youth to overcome challenges and build a brighter future.

The proclamation aligns with President Ronald Reagan's historic declaration in 1988, designating May as National Foster Care Month. This nationwide initiative aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by foster children and recognize the tireless efforts of organizations and individuals dedicated to supporting them.

As we observe Foster Care Awareness Month, let us unite as a community to celebrate the resilience of foster youth and reaffirm our commitment to supporting and advocating for their well-being. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families in Greene County and beyond.
